Physical Education

        


The Physical Education program at Brighton Beach aims to provide opportunities for students to:

Participate in a comprehensive skills based program

Develop a sense of a healthy lifestyle

Explore a variety of sporting activities

Develop and extend their understanding of teamwork

 Instil an ongoing pleasure from participating in physical activities

Promote social interaction through games

 

The curriculum promotes the understanding of the importance of physical activity and movement, food and nutrition, health, safety, human development and human relationships.

 

All students attend Physical Education for a 40 minute lesson per week, taken by a specialist Phys Ed. teacher. During both these and sport sessions, students explore different areas of the program including: ball skills, movement education and gymnastics, dance, athletics, fitness, minor games and major games.

 

A Perceptual Motor Skills Program is offered to all Prep children and is strongly supported by parent helpers.

 

Swimming - an intensive two week program for all in Prep to Year 6 is scheduled annually at Klim Swim, Cheltenham.

 

Fitness Testing -all students in Years 4 to 6 take part in fitness testing and are able to compare their results to those of other students.

 

Outdoor Education - a camping program is offered to students in Years 4 to 6. Years 4 and 5 participate in an Activities Base Camp while Year 6's do an Educational Tour.

 

A Ski Camp is offered to students in Years 6, 5 and 4 (depending on available places).

 

Sports Clinics and Expos in a variety of sports drawing on the expertise of elite athletes are offered to students. These include Netball, Basketball, AFL, Rugby, Soccer, European Handball, Taekwondo, Tennis and Hockey.

 

Intra and Inter school sport programs - are offered to students in Years 4 to 6.    Year 5 and 6 students  participate in Summer and Winter Sports competitions against other local schools with winners going on to represent the District against other Districts. Sports include Swimming, Softball, Cricket, Rounders, Bat Tennis, Volleyball, Football, Soccer, Netball, Tennis, Basketball and Hockey.                                                                                 

 

Year 4, 5 and 6 students all participate in Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics events within our school and students have the opportunity to represent our school at District Level.            

 

House Competition: all students are placed into one of four houses (Dendy, Gordon, Grainger, Wilson) for the duration of their education at BBPS. House competitions extend to Swimming Sports, Cross Country and Athletics events. Students in Year 6 are elected by their peers as  Captains and Vice Captains of their House. Leadership opportunities are available to these students.

 

Tabloid Sports: offered to all Year 1 children and is strongly supported by parent helpers.

 

Public Speaking: there are regular opportunities for students to report on sporting events to large groups of students and to the whole school community.
