Reading Recovery is a program that supports students in their second year of school, whose literacy skills are slow to develop. It enables these students to become active and independent readers and writers who are better able to join in the daily literacy activities of the classroom. At Brighton Beach, our Reading Recovery teacher, in consultation with the Early Years team, identifies students for the program based on individual observation and testing, and then teaches them to overcome their literacy learning difficulties; through a specially designed individual reading and writing program. Every student in the program has a daily thirty minute individual Reading Recovery session.
The classroom teacher, Reading Recovery teacher and parents work collectively together to support the child.
Taking part If your child is selected, the Reading Recovery teacher will contact you to organise a meeting. This is a chance for you to share what you know about your child's interests, experiences and literacy skills and attitudes. With your help, the Reading Recovery teacher can better understand the ways in which your child learns. Supporting your child As a parent you are strongly encouraged to support your child's learning at home. Just as you encouraged your child to learn how to walk and talk, you can be actively involved in helping your child's reading and writing. Read together Make a special time to read together every day. The Reading Recovery take-home books and the re-assembling of the cut-up sentence could be part of this special time. Praise and encourage all the efforts your child makes when reading a book. Enjoyment and understanding during reading time are most important. Visit the school During your child's Reading Recovery Lesson series you are invited to visit the school and watch your child participate in a Reading Recovery lesson. Keep up attendance If your child participates in the Reading Recovery program it will be on a daily basis. Therefore it is very important that your child attends school every day so that he or she can continue to make accelerated progress. Stay in touch Whilst on the program, contact the school if you wish to speak to the Reading Recovery teacher about your child's progress in Reading Recovery. |
