School Council Positions
Each year in February/March, an election is conducted for members of the school council for Brighton Beach Primary School. All government schools in Victoria have a school council; a legally formed body that sets the key directions of the school within centrally provided guidelines. There are three possible categories of membership:
A mandated elected parent category. Potential and retiring councillors can be nominated.
A mandated elected Department of Education and Training employee category.
An optional community member category.
The term of office for councillors is 2 years. Some members retire each year and this creates vacancies for the annual School Council elections. If you have a desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future, and contribute in ways that reflect the best interests of all students, please consider nominating.
Nomination forms for the vacancies on school council are now available from the office. If you are interested in nominating but cannot come to school to collect a nomination form, please telephone the office to request that we send one home with your child.
Nominations close at 4pm next Monday 18th February.
For more information see attachment.
The 2018 School Council will meet for their final meeting next Wednesday, 20th February at 7pm.
As shared last year, Deidre Lewis our previous PA president, will sadly not be continuing in the role this year. We thank Deidre for all that she has done to support our school community. We are still on the hunt for a 2019 president and enthusiastically call on you to consider taking on this role – or alternatively, find a partner and share this invaluable position! Please see the flyer in this week’s newsletter, and speak to Deidre or a member of the PA committee for further information.
Meet and Greets
Tuesday night was a great opportunity for parents and teachers alike to meet each other and share goals and aspirations for each child for 2019. Thank you to all families who attended.
Our Preps continue to settle into our school community and build relationships with their peers. Excitingly, they have lunch with their Year 5 buddies every day, attend assemblies on Monday, and have a rest day on Wednesday for the remainder of the month. On Wednesdays, prep families have the opportunity to meet with their class teacher for meet and greets and initial assessment.
Parent Information Sessions
There are several opportunities this term to build your understanding of key aspects of learning in the classroom.
Reading and Writing at Home: Consultant Julie Shepherd will be running a parent session this Tuesday, February 19, 9:30-10:30am to support parents of Prep-2 in engaging children in early reading and writing practices. Location will be shared via Compass once numbers are confirmed.
Curriculum Nights: Teachers will share focus areas for this year and key aspects of our teaching philosophy at BBPS. Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th February, See Compass Calendar for specific times for each grade.
Cybersafety: Sue MacLean presented at BBPS early last year. If you missed it, here is your chance to hear her speak about how to keep your child safe when using the internet. Invaluable and highly relevant, particularly for Years 4-6. This presentation will take place at Tucker Road PS, March 14th 7.00-8.30pm.
Years 3-6 have now completed their intensive swim safety program for the year. We wish all students, especially first-timers Year 3 and 4, who are competing in tomorrow’s carnival the very best. The carnival begins at 9:30am at SwimRight on Tulip Street, Sandringham.
